Blog deep dive: Is my smartphone hurting me?
For the first article, a fact checker of Jean Twenge's work, made by Sarah Rose Cavanagh. She shows out data flaws Twenge included in her article. In the article, Sarah said, "Moreover, there is good reason to think that smartphones and social media may have positive effects as well as negative effects." For example, our smartphones can help us stay more connected to our peers and social life. Smartphones can help teens can find other teens interested in the same social movements, connect with teens across the globe on interests like music and fashion. As a teenager that uses her phone quite frequently, I can say that social media definitely helped me find mutuals that had the same interests as me like, art and fashion.
In the second article, the author Jean, said the complete opposite. Jean said, but at the generational 12 level, when teens spend more time on smartphones and less time on in person social interactions and loneliness is more common. She draws attention to other studies showing that teenagers who spend more time on screens are more likely to experience depression, committing suicide, and get fewer hours of sleeping at night. The statistics does support all of these claims, regardless of how these problems connect to one another.
In my opinion, I think smartphones for me are not good because I don't really hang out with my friends anymore because I'd rather lay in my room all day while going on my phone. And watching certain thing on social like people talking about society's idea of "perfect beauty" definitely does not help with my mental health. social media/smartphones have had me depressed at some point, but thankfully I'm out of that now. I have and still trying to use my phone less. I would put my phone on do not disturb for a couple hours and do something productive like, doing homework, working out, going outside, doing chores, hang out with friends or family etc. Doing that has definitely helped me learn to not use my phone as often.
